Last year, on “pack a class” Sunday we had 120 people in Sunday School, which was the highest attended Sunday School day of the year. Mark your calendars, then call, text, Facebook or write your friends, family members and neighbors and ask them to be at Midway Baptist Church at 9:45am on January 29th. On the Sunday following “pack a class”, we will recognize the Sunday School class with the largest attendance and highest percentage of members in attendance. Hope to see you in Sunday School!

This February, we will conduct our annual nomination and election of four persons to serve three-year terms as deacons. What is a deacon? A deacon is a lay minister. Deacons are ordained for life and elected to three-year terms of active service. Deacons’ most visible duties include assisting the clergy in administering the Lord’s Supper, visiting the sick, reaching out in mission, and shepherding the congregation.

Sometimes they are given other responsibilities, such as preaching or baptizing.  The Deacons meet on a monthly basis and prayerfully consider all the business and ministries of the church.

Deacons also act as a “sounding board,” providing an avenue where church members can express their needs or opinions. Deacons often act to develop and initiate new ministries within the church. There is no handbook for deacon service; it is answering a call for higher service to their church congregation and Lord. Deacons are, by definition, servants of the church.  According to our church constitution, persons elected to serve as deacons should be dedicated Christians who possess spiritual maturity. Scriptures in Phil 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8-13; Romans 16:1 and Matt 28:19-20 give guidance to those considering deacon service.

To be eligible to serve as a deacon at Midway Baptist, a person must have been a member for at least two consecutive years or have been a member for at least one year and has previously served as a deacon in another church. On February 5th, in both Sunday morning services, you will be asked to nominate up to four (4) eligible persons to serve as deacons of Midway Baptist Church for the three-year term beginning March 12, 2012.

(Please do NOT nominate the following who are currently serving as Deacons: Letha Drury, Sean Endicott, David McCoun, Natalie Wyatt, Les Brown, Larry Craig, Allen Dobson, Darin Hensley, Donna Forman, Kenny Tackett, Nathan Craig or Derek Ball.) From the list of nominees who are eligible and willing to serve, a ballot will be presented to the church on Sunday, February 19th in both Sunday morning services.

The four persons receiving the most votes will be elected to serve. The following deacons have served their terms and will be rotating off: Letha Drury, Sean Endicott, David McCoun, and Natalie Wyatt. Please be in prayer about this important decision, and talk with those you are considering nominating to see if they would be willing to serve if elected.

On June 24, 2012 we will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the founding of Midway Baptist Church. MBC was founded on June 27, 1872.

On March 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, all Sunday School class’s attendance sheets will be recorded and assigned points based on two criteria: (1) the total number of people attending and (2) the percentage of people attending the class compared to the class roll. The first criteria favors the larger classes, while the second favors the smaller classes. On April 1^st, the two winners will be announced. Sunday school is a great way to grow your relationship with your Jesus and spend time sharing and praying with one another.
